FUNDRAISER: Updated Individuals who owe

All team fundraiser cards and monies were due on team picture day. As of May 18, there are still several individuals who have not turned in their fundraiser cards and money to the Fundraiser Coordinator. Those individuals are listed below:

  • Isaiah Lint - The Legacy Group (owes 10 cards)
  • Carlos Mendoza - The Legacy Group (owes 10 cards)
  • Caden Flanagan (owes 10 cards)

As a reminder, the board decided at its board meeting on February 12 the following repurcussions for those teams or individuals who do not return fundraiser materials: "If money and unsold cards don’t match (what was issued at the start of the fundraiser), the player will not be eligible for post season play, the coach will be required to sit the player for at least one game, the parent will have the money tacked on to next year’s registration and the parent’s name will be posted on the website and at the concession stand that their cards and money are outstanding."

Please make sure your fundraiser information is turned in right away. Contact Lisa Miller at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it with any questions.

HISTORY LESSON: Mcwain's tattoos show baseball past

Story courtesy of the Tri-City Herald

PASCO -- Mike McWain of Pasco is devoted to baseball. To pay homage to the game and its iconic players of yesteryear, McWain had a field of dreams tattooed across his back, shoulders and arms.

mike_mcwain"Shoeless" Joe Jackson is there, along with Honus Wagner, Babe Ruth, Joe DiMaggio, Ted Williams, Lou Gehrig, Walter Johnson and Ty Cobb.

The 39-year-old nuclear operator and union steward at Hanford admits his obsession with baseball is more about its history than the game itself.

"The first sport I ever remember watching on television was baseball," McWain said. "I was about 8 years old, and I watched the whole game, which was unusual for me. I think Pete Rose was playing."

As he grew up, his obsession escalated. He played the game and collected baseball cards through school and still has a few thousand cards stashed in boxes somewhere, he said.

But it wasn't until 1997 that McWain got his first baseball-themed tattoo. It was etched across his left shoulder and depicts the hand of God reaching through clouds holding a bat-swinging Babe Ruth in his palm.

McWain had a theme in mind to complete the scene, but 11 years passed before he caught the itch to finish the project.

"There were a lot of reasons I waited so long to finish this," he said. "At the time I got the first tattoo done, my son was born. I had a family to support and that had to come first, plus I wasn't making a lot of money back then to justify the expense."

He also wanted the portraits to look like the real players, so the tattoo artist needed to be accomplished enough to meet McWain's expectations.

TATTOO FAME: Red Apple manager gets national interest

Story from the Tri-City Herald

Mike McWain's tattoos that display a history of baseball are causing quite a stir. Or, more accurately, a media sensation.

Mike Mcwain's History of BaseballEver since the front page Tri-City Herald story Monday about the Pasco man's field of dreams tattoos appeared, newscasters and writers as well as sports enthusiasts across the country have been hounding him for interviews and turning his life upside down.

"It has been totally crazy since the story ran," McWain told the Herald on Thursday. "My kids love all the attention, though."

He's been interviewed by newspaper sports writers from The Daily in New York, chatted on the radio with the sportscaster for the Cincinnati Reds baseball team, and this week was interviewed by Tony Ott on KONA AM and FM 98.3 The Key radio.

"Friends have been telling me my tattoos are all over the internet," McWain said. "It really is insane how far this has gone. I never would have imagined this kind of reaction could happen over baseball tattoos."

PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE: The future of KAYB

jeff_groceSpring is here and the 2012 season is upon us and now the full league is playing. As we start a new season I would like to talk a bit about where we are headed.

I believe, that while KA will survive just about anything, I think most of us are not satisfied with mere survival but rather move into the future with the continuance of excellence that comes with having an organization and facility that instills pride and joy. As with a lot of non-profit organizations the bulk of the work and dedication rests upon a handful of people willing to give up something in their personal lives in order to make the organization a workable entity. I want to thank those that have given so much of their time and money to make KA the envy of a lot of other youth baseball organizations. Having said that, below might be some interesting facts you may not be aware of:

  • The last Annual Meeting/Election of Board members (October 2011) was comprised of 16 parents, out of a total of approximately 1,000 parents. The year before (2010) we had 26 attend the Annual Meeting.
  • Current Board members have been on the Board for an average of four years. We get 1-3 new members a year. This year, we have two new members; one of which is the wife of a current board member. Four board members don’t even have kids in the league and combine for 27 years of board participation.
  • We have one board member who holds two board positions because we didn’t have anyone volunteer for the Tournament Director position. We have another board member who is supposed to share the position with another but is doing it herself because we didn’t have a volunteer to take the other co-position. Those two Board members are husband and wife.
  • Field 3 has been substantially remodeled. Due to some unforeseen circumstances we had but only a few days to get the field ready to be played on. We had three people spend a combined 56 hours getting it ready and had to pay two high School boys about $110 for 10 hours of work in addition. We never had volunteers to help.
  • The past five years KA has hosted a State or Regional Tournament and this year we will not. We have lost money each year and primarily because we have to pay for so many of the services needed as we can’t get enough volunteers.

I would like to extend an invitation to get more involved. KA needs new parents with new ideas, new enthusiasm and new energy to get involved as Board members. My hope is that the majority of the parents are simply unaware that we need help.

KA cannot exist without the active dedicated participation of the families and in particular the parents to whom KA serves. The league and facility is one of the top 3 in the Pacific Northwest. Your child plays in such a facility because of the dedication of very few. Please take a moment and consider what you can do to help.
